    Summer Campin’ in the Midlands

    With the school year quickly coming to an end, it is a great time to start planning your child’s summer activities. Luckily, this isn’t a difficult task when we live in such a vibrant city like Columbia.
     

    Check out these nine different summer camp options that are sure to excite children of all ages.
     
    PAALS
    PAALS, Palmetto Animal Assisted Living Services, will offer several summer camps this year. Two of the PAALS summer camps this year will focus on reading skills. The Summer PAALS Reading Camp will be held at the Big Red Barn Retreat, and will give kids an opportunity to experience the outdoors, while also learning the fundamentals of reading. In order to reach kids of all ages, PAALS will also offer a Summer PAALS Junior Reading Camp. This will be held at the PAALS Training School and will work on building study skills, vocabulary and critical thinking skills.

    Cardinal Newman
    Cardinal Newman High School offers an array of athletic summer camps in a variety of different sports including basketball, baseball, football, running, tennis, and volleyball. One coming up in late June is their 12th annual co-ed tennis camp, which will focus on the fundamentals of tennis for intermediate/advanced levels.

    Hammond
    Hammond is hosting a weekly camp throughout the summer for kids to experience the arts and outdoors. With eight different weeks to choose from, Hawk Ridge camp will offer unique program themes ranging from the Wild Wild West to Splish Splash Blast and is for children 3 years of age through 12th grade.

    Heathwood Hall
    Heathwood offers a variety of camps for children and adults throughout the summer months. One program they are hosting this summer will involve a trip to Glacier National Park & Banff, in Canada. This expedition is targeted towards adults and high school students who are interested in hiking and camping in some of the world’s most beautiful scenery.

    Anne Bivens Jewelry
    Learn from artist Anne Bivens in her home studio this summer! She is holding a summer jewelry course, where you can receive a week of instruction in her studio. This instruction will range from how to etch a copper plate, to how to make a ring, earrings, pendant and cuff bracelet.

    Riverbanks Zoo & Garden
    Riverbanks Zoo & Garden’s summer camp weekly summer camps will run from June 11 to August 17, and will provide fun activities for kids from 3 to 13. At this camp, kids will explore wildlife and much more as the summer progresses.

    EdVenture Children’s Museum
    With a variety of camps going on at EdVenture, it’s hard to pick just one! EdVenture is hosting a summer camp entirely devoted to cooking. The Little Bites program will be held in June and will introduce campers to the world of cooking from food preparation to tasting. This camp can also be fun for parents, since camp goers will get the chance to bring home their tasty creations and recreate them in their own kitchens.

    Strictly Running
    Strictly Running will offer a Cross Country Camp this summer for a week of individualized, expert coaching and training for your child’s upcoming cross country or track season. Not only will this camp offer notes on warm up drills and workouts, but it will also kick off each day with guest speakers. They will end the mornings back at the Strictly Running store with post-workout fuel, film overviews and prize giveaways.

    SC Rough Riders Weekend With the Pros
    Weekend With the Pros event is held in mid June and will offer lessons with pro riders that are in town. If interested, you can choose from two different lessons that will give people of all ages and skill levels the chance to become more confident in the water, and take their riding skills to the next level.
