Columbia has a way of inspiring its determined dreamers, and for Zora Capers, Columbia is the perfect backdrop for helping others grow—both in fitness and in life. As the owner and head coach of The Garden Gym, Zora has spent the last ten years in the fitness and wellness industry, bringing every ounce of her experience to her clients in a space that feels welcoming, supportive, and judgment-free.
“I started The Garden Gym because I saw a gap between intimidating gym environments and what people actually need,” Zora explains. Her journey began with strength training—in gyms, at home, and even traveling to clients—but she noticed a common thread: many women feel unsure where to start or nervous stepping into a traditional gym. “I wanted to create a place where anyone, whether brand new to fitness or seasoned, could feel safe, supported, and empowered to grow.”
The Garden Gym’s mission is simple: to help people cultivate sustainable strength physically, mentally, and spiritually. “Fitness grows like a garden, planting healthy gym habits and creating an environment where people can grow at their own pace,” Zora says. Born and raised in Columbia, she wanted her gym to reflect the city’s strong sense of community, wellness, and genuine connection. “Columbia embodies the kind of support I wanted for The Garden Gym,” she adds.
Zora’s approach is personal, intentional, and rooted in expertise. As a certified orthopedic nurse, she understands injury prevention and tailors every program to meet individual goals, abilities, and challenges. “No two programs are the same,” she emphasizes. “It’s not about chasing a certain look or quick fixes. It’s about education, long-term growth, and real relationships.”
With spring in full swing, Zora encourages everyone to “spring into motion” through The Garden Gym’s personal training, small group sessions, and community programs in the works. “Columbia is full of supportive, wellness-driven people. There are always ways to get moving—whether it’s a walk along the Riverfront Park or Saluda Riverwalk, joining a local running club, or participating in our gym events,”
she says.
For Zora, fitness is more than movement—it’s a way to cultivate confidence, strength, and a sense of belonging. In Columbia, she has built a space where all of that can flourish.
