Spring in Columbia is the perfect time to shake off winter’s slow pace, stretch your legs, and enjoy all the city has to offer. Whether your idea of movement is breaking a sweat at your local gym, exploring the scenic trails and waterways of the Midlands, or trying something new just for fun, Columbia has endless ways to get up, get out, and feel alive this season. From outdoor adventures to community classes and everything in between, there’s something for every pace and ability. Here are a few ways to spring into motion this season!

Camping

Right in the center of South Carolina, Soda City is close to several excellent camping destinations where you can sleep under the stars.

Sesquicentennial State Park
Just 20 minutes outside of downtown Columbia, Sesquicentennial State Park offers shaded campsites, a scenic lake loop, and easy access to hiking and biking trails.

Congaree National Park
With two campgrounds, a winding creek for kayaking, and the park’s well-known bald cypresses towering above, spend a weekend camping at South Carolina’s only national park.

Dreher Island State Park
Explore Lake Murray like never before with a weekend camping trip in Dreher Island State Park. There, cabins and campgrounds alike are available for reservations!

Your own backyard
Sometimes the simplest adventures are the best—string up some lights, gather your s’mores supplies, and enjoy a cozy night outdoors at home.

Fishing

From generation to generation, fishing offers a chance to pass on knowledge and make memories away from the hustle and bustle of the city. 

Congaree River
Largemouth bass and bluegill are plentiful in this wide freshwater river.

Saluda Shoals Park
The Saluda River is perfect for a relaxing day of fly fishing paired with scenic walking paths and picnic areas.

Lake Murray
Known as the “Jewel of South Carolina,” Lake Murray is a favorite for spring fishing, boating, and lakeside lounging.

Hiking & Biking

Stretch your legs and get moving with these beautiful nature trails.

Cayce Riverwalk Park
A local WeCo favorite, this flat and scenic path follows the Congaree River and is ideal for walkers, runners, and cyclists alike.

Harbison State Forest
With several trails spanning out in all directions, this forest is a must-visit destination for anyone who wants to explore on foot (or on two wheels).

The Palmetto Trail
Stretching across the entire state from the coast to the Upstate, the Palmetto Trail offers accessible segments totaling nearly 500 miles, including routes near Columbia that showcase the Midlands’ natural beauty.

Finlay Park
Right in the city center, the recently renovated Finlay Park is great for a leisurely stroll, outdoor workouts, or a quick midday reset.

Guignard Park
Just off Knox Abbott Drive in Cayce, Guignard Park features an accessible, paved trail that loops through tall trees and across a small creek.

Active Adventures

There’s no shortage of ways to stay active in Columbia this spring. From disc golf to axe throwing and more, there’s something for everyone in Soda City. 

Capital Climbing Gym
Climb, reach, and move your way across this dynamic rock climbing gym in Cayce.

Whitewater 101
Learn the basics of kayaking and paddling with expert instruction from nonprofit Whitewater 101, designed to help you build confidence on the river. 

Owens Field Park

Cobblestone Golf Club
Nestled in Blythewood, the beautifully maintained grounds of the Cobblestone course is comprised of 27 holes—with three individual sets of nines so you can play the game with variety. 

Transmission Arcade

Riverbanks Zoo & Garden
Take a walk on the wild side and stroll through the zoo—all the way to the botanical gardens.

Disc Golf at Crooked Creek Park
